We are working towards curing preventable and curable loss of hearing and blindness in Kenya by providing hearing aids and covering the cost of eye surgery

Did you know that cataracts are the leading cause of blindness in the world, despite the fact that they are completely treatable?

A cataract is the clouding of the lens of the eye. Although it accounts for more than 50% of all blindness, vision can be restored with surgery.
However, in countries with poor healthcare systems, cataract surgery is very expensive and nearly impossible to get.
The World Health Organization estimates that 18 million people in the world suffer from blindness caused by cataracts simply because they can not afford treatment due to poverty.

When someone loses their eyesight, their quality of life suffers immeasurably; finding work and caring for a family become nearly impossible tasks.

Treatment of preventable blindness, like cataract and low vision, is one of the most effective ways to lift people out of poverty, especially for vulnerable communities like refugees living in makeshift environments.

UMR IS PUTTING EXTRAORDINARY EFFORT INTO REVERSING THIS ALARMING TREND THROUGH ITS VISION 2021 CAMPAIGN

With UMR’s Vision 2021 Campaign, our goal is to provide 1,000 cataract surgeries to some of the most underprivileged including the elderly, disabled, refugees and vulnerable people in the community, many of whom live without any support from their relatives and governments.

Since 2016, UMR has been sending medical missions to places like Kenya, Jordan, and Bangladesh to perform cataract surgeries on patients in need. Under this initiative, in coordination with partner NGOs and Ministries of Health, over 1,000 cataract surgeries have been successfully performed free of cost to date thanks to thousands of good-hearted donors like YOU. Alhamdulillah!

Our surgeries have been 100% successful with no recurring complications, and cost as little as $100. Your donation of $100 covers the surgery, post surgery eye drops, and follow-up care for one eye.

SOLOMON LOST ONE EYE AND WAS ABOUT TO LOSE THE OTHER TO A CATARACT

Solomon was fortunate and received cataract surgery. "I want to thank all of you for donating to this campaign as I have been blind for 6 years. My right eye was damaged by a rock when I was digging a well and now my only eye that was working has been slowly losing sight from cataracts"

DEAFNESS AND HEARING LOSS

Over 5% of the world’s population – or 466 million people – has disabling hearing loss (432 million adults and 34 million children). It is estimated that by 2050 over 900 million people – or one in every ten people – will have disabling hearing loss.

Approximately one third of people over 65 years of age are affected by disabling hearing loss. The prevalence in this age group is greatest in South Asia, Asia Pacific and sub-Saharan Africa.
One of the main impacts of hearing loss is on the individual’s ability to communicate with others. Spoken language development is often delayed in children with unaddressed hearing loss.

Unaddressed hearing loss and ear diseases such as otitis media can have a significantly adverse effect on the academic performance of children. They often have increased rates of grade failure and greater need for education assistance. Access to suitable accommodations is important for optimal learning experiences but are not always available.

Exclusion from communication can have a significant impact on everyday life, causing feelings of loneliness, isolation, and frustration, particularly among older people with hearing loss.
We need to continue this work. There are thousands of people out there in great need of hope, and a chance to see and hear again.

Join over 9,000 supporters and give the gift of sight and hearing to those in need today.

For as little as $60-$100 you will be able to give vision or hearing back to a person in need.
